Laya's practice focuses on complex civil litigation, business litigation, general liability defense, mass tort defense and employment-related litigation. Laya has defended employers, corporate officers/directors and corporate representatives in business-related lawsuits involving workplace harassment, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, defamation, business torts, breach of contract and breach of fiduciary. Laya also has considerable knowledge and experience handling cases for common carriers and public entities, particularly in the areas of transportation (rail), torts, compliance, property and casualty; as well as insurance defense litigation involving personal injury, products liability and premises liability.

Prior to joining Zfaty | Burns, Laya was a Partner at Ulich Ganion Balmuth Fisher LLP and Cummins & White, LLP. She has volunteered with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (investigating endangered birds), NOAA (investigating watershed issues), South Royalton Legal Clinic (providing Pro Bono legal services to indigent clients), and was the recipient of the Jonathan B. Chase Scholarship. Her LL.M. from the University of Washington School of Law focused on Marine Law and Affairs.

Laya also provides Pro Bono services for small businesses throughout Southern California. Laya has served as Moderator and now sits on the Board of Directors of the Non-Profit Organization “Global Resource for Advancing Cancer Education,” where she helps cancer patients, families and caregivers with access to information regarding their disease and treatment. She also has served as a Board Member to the CDM Girls Volleyball Foundation and AYSO Region 57. Laya is fluent in Farsi (Persian).
